Fox Attack

Thursday, June 20, 2019 No comments
I haven't wrote in quite awhile, so I need to update on everything that's been happening. We recently had a fox kill about half our chicken flock. This was a brazen fox that we actually caught walking up our driveway in broad daylight attacking one of our chickens. After that we decided to buy a livestock guardian dog. We got an Anatolian Shepard and Great Pyrenees mixed puppy.
We also started working on another chicken cage with a higher roost. The chickens all stay around the house now and rarely go back to their old coop. They have been roosting on the fence beside the pig shed. I'll post more pictures later! Take care all!

Baby Was Pregnant

I posted on here awhile back that I thought my pig might be pregnant, but then I found out the neighbor had been throwing her food. So, I thought maybe she gained weight from that. Turns out she was pregnant! Yesterday evening, she wouldn't come out of her stall at dinner time. I knew something was up because Baby don't miss no meals. I went and checked on her, and it was pretty obvious she was in labor.

We didn't have pig rails set up for the babies yet, so my husband took some measurements and we were hoping to get them put in before she had any babies. While my husband went to gather materials, I stayed in the stall with Baby. Before my husband could get back, she popped out her first baby with me in there with her.
So, I told my husband not to disturb her, and we decided just to stay with her and keep a check that she didn't sit on any of the babies. The first 4 babies went pretty fast. The last one took about an hour. She ended up having 5 babies.
We put a light up in the stall, and I told my husband that if she gets up to go eat and drink, then I was going to try and bring them all in the house since we never got the pig rails up. Well, she got up, and I was able to bring them all in the house so I can keep an eye on them. So far, she has been an excellent mother! She takes special care not to sit on them. She goes out to potty, then comes back in with them. I got a litterbox for the babies, and I'm trying to put them in it as I catch them trying to potty. I used toilet tissue to clean up their pee, then put the tissue in the box so they could smell it. So far, they are doing good for only being a day old....LoL
Here they are just laying around suckling after I got them all in the house. So stinking cute! Pigs are born with their eyes open and with teeth!
Baby has mud on her hooves, but there was no way I wanted to disturb her after just having babies. We'll get her good and cleaned up once she recoups some!

Rooster

I posted a while back that one of our hens hatched some chicks, and two of them happened to be roosters. I don't care for roosters. It seems they always turn hateful. But, we decided to keep these two for now, and if they turn hateful, they are going to be chicken soup! So far, they seem to be occupied with each other more than attacking us. I think one of the major differences between these roosters and past roosters is that these were not hand-raised. Our hen raised the chicks on her own until one day she left them. Past roosters were usually bought from Tractor Supply and had been hatched through an incubator, so we had to feed them, keep them warm, and handle them to clean cages. You'd think being handled would make them nicer, but it seems, it may make you competition. If my theory is right, which I'm not saying it is, then roosters raised by their mother and not humans are better and less likely to attack you. So far, that is my experience. Here is a video of one of the roosters trying to peck around in the dirt that my husband was digging up to prepare to plant some veggies.

Sunbathing

Recently, we built a new fence for the pigs so they'd have more room to roam. It was a rather warm day yesterday, almost 60F, so the pigs got to do some sunbathing.
This past weekend, our neighbor came over, who happens to be a preacher, and we often load him up with eggs! He says, "I hope you don't mind, I've been throwing scraps to your pigs." What's so funny about this is that I just told my husband that I thought Baby might be pregnant because she has gained so much weight....LoL For the last two weeks, I was reading on how to prepare for piglets....LoL I have my pigs on a very strict diet. I feed them mini-pig food twice a day, sometimes they get snacks or leftovers, but I want them to forage. I don't mind that he feeds them, but I do need to watch her weight! He often has kids over there and they love to come look at the pigs. Here is a video of Lil' Pig sunbathing and Baby shaking her big, ol' booty....LoL

Fuzzy Got Groomed

Yesterday, we groomed Fuzzy. Grooming English Angora rabbits takes some time because they have so much fur!
Taking a break in this picture! You can see some of the fur in this picture, but way more than this was removed!
Looking cute!
The infamous grumpy face!
